GCSE geography resources

Geography teaches us about places, and helps students make sense of a dynamically changing world. It explains where places are, how places and landscapes are formed, how people and their environment behave in the way they do, and how diverse economies, societies and environments are interconnected. Geography is important as it encourages questioning, investigation and critical thinking about the world and people’s lives – now and in the future.

With so many resources available on the internet, we have come up with our recommended websites for GCSE Geography:

GCSE Bitesize Geography: This site focuses on the most important areas students need to master, including water and rivers, coasts, ecosystems, weather and climate, development, population, etc. As you click on each category, you are introduced to a revision of key areas, a video summarising important points, and finally, a test to check your knowledge of various fields. The site serves as a highly useful revision tool and will take hours to get through. The handy division of the subject into smaller sub-topics makes it easy for students to hone in on areas they need more help on.

Class Clips – Geography: Teachers and students can watch a host of interesting videos which will enlighten them on a diverse range of subjects – everything from climate change to geology, people and resources, tribes, rivers, rural agriculture, tourism and war and conflict.

Coastlines of the North East: This site is particularly interesting for students seeking to learn more about the North East coast of Scotland, as well as beautiful areas like the Forvie National Nature Reserve or the Balmedie Country Park. Students are invited to explore topics, watch videos, play games and increase their knowledge base through a wide range of interesting reading material.

Development and Health: This site is aimed at students studying Development and Health, but it actually contains vital information for GCSE Geography students, since it discusses the many factors that affect the development of countries (human, physical, social and economic) as well health issues which are tied in to development.

Environmental Hazards: This useful site presents two detailed studies: one focusing on a flash flood in Inverness and the other on the eruption of a volcano on a Caribbean island. The site details the cause of these natural disasters, as well as the latter’s impact and predictability, and the actions taken by human beings to counter their effects. At the end of each study, students are called upon to answer important revision questions.

GeoResources: This simple but extremely useful site is divided into 12 topics, including plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes; water cycle, weather and climate; and population and migration. Click on each topic to find a host of useful geography resources, including maps, information on particular natural disasters, advice on preparation for events like earthquakes, and important fact sheets.

GCSE Geography Revision Guide: This online revision tool imposes a small charge for students, tutors and parents (around £4.50), but it contains a wealth of useful diagrams and practical study notes, as well as tips on how to prepare for the GCSEs. The site allows you to try a demo of the online resource, so consider making a small but worthwhile investment.

Cool Geography: Students, teachers and parents will find useful revision links, activities and notes on a plethora of subjects, including the human world, the economic world, cities, rivers, coasts and glaciers. The revision page contains valuable materials for GCSE students in the lead up to the big exam.

We hope that you have found these resources useful. If you would like to share a website that you also think is great, then please do so by adding a comment below.
