It’s New Year, and that time of year again, isn’t it?

We all make the same resolutions every year, such as to stop smoking, be more dedicated to our families, or lose weight. You see what I mean.

While we might make ourselves a list of promises every new year about how we plan on improving our diet, exercising more and improving the relationships that we have in our lives why not make ourselves a promise that will yield more beneficial results?

When it comes to the educational world, there are many things we can look at that are in need of improvement.  Here are some things you can do individually and things we can all do to make sure 2023 is worth top marks all around…

You might even have your own Reasons to refuse home tutoring if you feel it will help you accomplish your goals.

How you can accomplish your academic resolutions

Try integrating academic performance and beneficial study habits into your new year’s resolutions this year. Having goals which align with your lifestyle and schedule will make them far more attainable.

Not to mention that there are more stakeholders in your education, so you won’t just be accomplishing them for yourself. This might even help you in adding some often much-needed accountability to your learning.

Try setting your sights on the end-of-year exams and give yourself a target to hit for each of the subjects that you take. This way your efforts will be rewarded by improving your grades at school.

Try to take those mock exams seriously

Mock exams have always been the bane of students. Why? Because all it ever is is you sitting exams that prove very little.  Or so you think.

I can always remember sitting them and being told that I got a certain grade for my work and it always turned out to be the one I got in the end.  What did I get out of them?  Very little.

If you are in an exam year at school, then perhaps setting up your New Year resolutions and goals so that they are exam-oriented is one of the best ways to achieve academic success.

Academic success is of course a term that you will have to determine for yourself. What this looks like to you should be entirely different from your friends and classmates.

The first milestone that you can choose to track your performance and put your hard work to the test is in the mock exams. These exams are designed to gear you for the upcoming end-of-year GCSE or A-level assessments, so they can be quite daunting even for most academic students. Similarly, preparing for the SATs exams can be stressful for younger students.

But they don't have to be so intimidating. There's nothing to say you won't perform excellently and set yourself up for even greater outcomes when the real thing comes around in June if you take the proper precautions and mentally prepare yourself.

The mock exams will be your first opportunity to complete a full paper within the allocated time while it is formatted exactly as it would be for the GCSEs or A levels, so for the majority of you. There won't be any questions on this paper that were simplified for you, adjusted for your class, or given more information.

It will just be a typical sample of a paper when you have to take your GCSEs or A levels in June, therefore it's important to get used to responding to test questions the way they will appear on your paper.

For as long as students are pulled out of valuable lesson time to take part in this tradition, kids are going to have to put up with it.  It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and many indeed question why they are needed.

However, for those of you requiring references, teachers can be a bit mean and base predicted grades on what you do in mock exams… Therefore, if you’re doing them, try taking them as seriously as possible.  They are a surprisingly good indicator of what you get and they’ll keep some important people happy.

Make sure that you are rested for school

Perhaps the easiest method that you could adopt in order to ensure that you set yourself up for success in achieving the new year's resolutions that you set yourself at the beginning of the academic calendar is by ensuring that you get enough rest.

A good night's sleep is necessary to ensure that you are prepared for a fresh day of learning. If you don't have the time or are not accustomed to taking an afternoon nap, maintaining a night-time sleep schedule can assist your brain regeneration.

You will learn better if you have a regular sleep schedule and get enough sleep each night. More than this, it can support your decision-making, day-to-day activities, and responsiveness to external stimuli.

Keeping your brain focused requires you to get enough sleep each night. A student staying up all night studying will also have a negative effect on their performance, just as a sprinter wouldn't do so before competing in the Olympic relay event.

Getting insufficient and irregular sleep is not the path to academic success so make sure to leave it in 2022!

Making sure that your body gets the rest that it needs in order to improve your performance and success at school also extends to taking naps around times when you need to perform intensive tasks. Taking naps can ensure that you have the energy required to achieve in your homework and your exams.

Every student's strategy for succeeding on exams should include getting a full 8 hours of sleep each night. A power nap could also be taken in order to supplement this rest if it is needed.

Being well-rested will refresh the body and brain, heighten alertness and promote a positive frame of mind. This in turn will improve concentration and attitudes to study.

In essence, it is similar to taking a break, but because you are relaxing your body and mind by closing your eyes, it is a supercharged break.

Have you ever asked yourself the bigger question, Why private tutoring?

Prepare for your future

It sometimes can be a little scary looking ahead, can’t it?  You like to live for now, or are perhaps uncertain of looking at something like that.  Completely understand.

To be sure you are aware of what you are doing now, what you are working toward, and what you might want to accomplish in the future, take some time periodically, wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

I’m in my third year of university… When I’m done with this year, I’ll have one left to get through and then I’m out into the big wide world.  I’ve made myself a commitment to go through my options this year so that I know for sure what I want to do when I leave university with a degree in hand.

If you are in Year 10, start considering the overall GCSE results you want to attain and even consider your alternatives for the future. Time isn't exactly on your side if you're in Year 12!

If you’ve ever had a childhood dream about what you wanted to do, my advice is to go back and have a good old think about those days when you could dream and pick.  You never know, you might find something that still appeals.

Creating an effective plan for the new year

If you want to be held accountable and stay on track as you progress towards the goals that you set yourself in the classroom this new year you will need to set yourself a plan.

You will need to write out exactly what it is that you would like to achieve. This could be that you want to accomplish a grade of 85% or above in your history exam or get the top grade in biology. The more specific you are with your goals the better!

You will also need to provide yourself with some metrics that you can use to track your progress as the year progresses. You might want to maintain a certain mark in your class tests throughout the year in order to ensure you are meeting the standard that you have set yourself.

When setting out your initial timeframe draws to a conclusion, you should consider who and where you want to be. Your ability to accomplish your goals and possibly find some encouragement along the road will be aided by having a clear picture of that individual in your mind.

When it comes to achieving the resolutions you make for the new year, the adage "you get out what you put in" is undoubtedly true.

Many students may make their plans before taking these examinations, and it is then immediately apparent how differently they are aware of where they are on their route.

You might find that many of the same skills that you identified as needing development when you first outlined your goals and aspirations have already been addressed. You can tell that you are self-aware by doing this. In the classroom, this ability is highly valued, and it typically leads to better communication and exam scores.

This is one way that you can put your new year's resolutions into action at school. If you implement these habits into your routine you can be sure to accomplish the resolution that you had set for yourself for the new year.

Happy New Year to you all!
