Critical Thinking is offered as an A Level option at many sixth forms and colleges and is usually taken as an extra A Level, alongside three other subjects. This skills-based course allows you to focus on developing your ability to analyse, hypothesise and construct your own arguments. It’s not an A Level that simply tells you the answers and then leaves you to revise them for an exam but rather one that encourages you to think independently and come to your own conclusions. But why exactly is this so important? Let’s take a look at some more specific reasons why many students find an A Level in Critical Thinking a worthwhile, relevant and useful subject.

Advantages of Critical Thinking

The advantages of taking Critical Thinking include:

  • Critical Thinking allows you to be very self-reflective and to evaluate arguments for credibility. The ability to reflect on your own opinions and how you communicate them is a valuable skill that will come in useful in a variety of jobs.
  • Critical thinking is useful for degrees in Philosophy and Ethics and Theology and Religious Studies because it encourages you to formulate your own arguments and not be afraid to ask difficult questions concerning ethical issues.
  • Because this subject doesn’t provide easy answers or make difficult decisions for you it allows you to develop your decision making abilities. This is such an important skill which will serve you well in any career, academic or industrial that you decide to pursue.
  • Critical Thinking will force you to question your own values, beliefs and what you may have previously considered knowledge. This is a personally enriching practise that should stay with you for the rest of your life, allowing you to think critically about your life, your relationships with others and the societal conventions that most of us conform to.
  • This A Level will give you the opportunity to express your own ideas on a regular basis which helps you to learn to do so clearly and concisely. Being able to communicate your thoughts, opinions and ideas effectively is a really useful skill which will be valuable for any jobs or degrees.
  • Because Critical Thinking encourages you to approach issues from a range of moral and ethical positions, this A Level will allow you to develop your empathy and understanding of those who are different to you.
  • Critical Thinking is an intensive course, taught in only 1½ hours per week. While this may sound intimidating to some, if you still think the course is right for you, this A Level will be really helpful when it comes to developing your time management and organisational skills. Additionally, if you achieve good results in a subject that has significantly less teaching hours than the rest, it’s going to look really impressive to universities and future employers.

So, if the benefits of Critical Thinking are exciting you, you’re up for the challenge of an intensive course and keen to bag an extra A Level to make your university application stand out then Critical Thinking is a fantastic opportunity for you. Happy critiquing!
