"The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience." -Eleanor Roosevelt

When we're young, it is the perfect time to go out and try new things. However, with youth comes a sense of invincibility that slowly dissolves as the later years come about; therefore, persons in their late teens and twenties should do all they can to experience unforgettable adventures truly.

It's important to state that though the university years are jam-packed with life-changing moments, there is so much studying that must take place to pass tests and eventually get your degree that it's sometimes hard to get some fun in the schedule. That is why youngsters should have a "bucket list" of things they should be doing before starting uni.

So, whether you are a secondary school student about to commence university in the autumn or you are enjoying one of your much-needed summer breaks before further education studies begin again, in today's article, we'll take a look at the top ten essential experiences and things to learn that students should do before uni!

Let's go

Go to a Music Festival

As a fan of music festivals, I wholeheartedly believe that everyone should experience them at least once in their life. Unfortunately, during pandemic times, it seemed that music festivals would become extinct; however, with vaccine passports becoming commonplace, music venues are opening again and are more than ready to welcome the masses!

In the UK, there is the world-famous Glastonbury festival that most students know about. Still, it's worth mentioning that there are plenty of music festivals across different genres that are held throughout the year and sure to tickle your fancy!

Music festivals are brilliant for pre-university students since they allow you the opportunity to experience chill vibes, meet cool people, and travel across the country to where the venue is located. Also, since festivals are held in the summer, they are great for uni students on break.

Get a Job

While it may not be the most exciting entry on today's list, getting a job before the university years start is a must for all persons. Why's that? Getting a job is helpful for the following reasons:

  • You can save a bunch of money before school starts,
  • You learn how to be more responsible,
  • You meet like-minded individuals who end up becoming your friends.

No matter where you live in the United Kingdom, plenty of student jobs are open during the summer months. The money you save from your summer job will ensure that you have some cash for fun activities during the uni months.

Learn Some Essential Cooking Skills

Before starting university, you are most likely a high school student living at home with no cooking skills since your Mum took such good care of all things food! However, as you know, Mum and Dad won't be there to cook for you every day when you're at uni; so, it's a good idea to learn how to cook.

Learning essential cooking abilities should never be viewed as a chore but rather as an exciting culinary adventure that will delight your taste buds. We highly recommend watching YouTube tutorials from professional chefs, taking a cooking course, or asking your Mum for some lessons.

If you know how to cook at your dorm, you'll impress your flatmates and be saved from eating instant noodles during all your uni years!

Travel: Domestically and Internationally

One of the most incredible things you can do before university starts is travel. Whether you take a trip domestically or internationally, the memories that you create are unforgettable and will keep you going throughout the boring parts of classes.

Depending on your budget, you might want to take a domestic trip across the UK to explore new parts of your home country that you hadn't been to beforehand. On the other hand, if you have more cash to spend, we highly recommend immersing yourself in a new culture abroad.

Travelling is meant for your youth.

Whether you go alone on a solo trip or you travel with some of your closest friends, you will not regret it!

Let's go

Complete Some Volunteer Work

Learning to give to others and your community is one of the greatest lessons that can be acquired during your formative years before uni starts. So, we highly recommend finding ways to volunteer your time to non-profitable organisations.

Not only will you feel that you're using your time wisely, but you will also meet fantastic people who are dedicating their lives to helping people. In addition, through volunteer work, you may also discover what you desire to study during your further education years.

Volunteerism is also something that stays with you if it is learned from a young age.

Make New Friends

Before university starts and your schedule gets crowded with studying and extracurricular activities, it's a good idea to spend your time making new friends or strengthening existing ones.

The moments you will have with your closest companions during the summer months will fill up your tank and ensure that you don't feel lonely once uni begins. Additionally, by creating friendships with like-minded individuals who are also about to attend university, you are networking and creating a support system of people that will be there to help you during difficult times.

So, go out, meet people and fill your extra time with fantastic experiences with new friends!

Take Advantage of Summer Events

After the sometimes depressing winter months and rainy springtime, the summer months are warmly welcomed by most Brits across the United Kingdom, and there are so many things to do!

So, before uni starts and you have less time to enjoy events such as movie screenings in the park, farmer's markets, festivals, and food tours, you should try to keep as many of your weekends open to enjoying summer events.

Also, since you'll most likely be studying at a uni located in a large city such as London, Leeds, or Birmingham, students are wise to spend some of their summer months exploring the outdoors on hikes, camping, and nature walks.

Attend a Gig

Although we touched on the entertainment value of attending music festivals in our first subheading, pre-university students should also dedicate some time to attending gigs at smaller venues. Going to shows is perfect for those with some disposable money and is much more common among young people than older adults who have family obligations and many bills to pay.

Some gigs that are worthy of attending include the following:

  • Comedy shows,
  • Live music gigs in small venues,
  • Classical music orchestra performances,
  • Unique expositions at art galleries,
  • Movie screenings.

Going to performing arts performances and unique expositions keeps you cultured and help you learn new things while having fun, just what the doctor ordered before making your way to uni for the fall!

Spend Time With Family

Whether you do or don't already spend a great deal of time with your family, once further education classes start, you will slowly realise how few times you will see your folks and siblings a year. Most university students don't live near their family home and only get the opportunity to see their parents, grandparents, and brothers and sisters on holidays such as Christmas and spring break.

Therefore, before you move to uni, you should have 'spending as much time with my family' on your pre-university bucket list. If you're in your late teens, you might want your independence, and you are probably extremely excited to move far away from home. However, remember that the special moments you have with your family, you will never get back; so, make the best of it!

Visit Your New University

An enjoyable thing to do before you start university is taking a road trip with your friends or family to the centre of further education that you will attend in the future. The summertime is a great time to visit unis since the students are all gone for the summer, and you can see what the indoors and the outdoors of the university looks like without bothering the faculty and alumni.

Not only is visiting a few potential universities entertaining, but it is also a good idea to develop a vision of where you will be living and studying; this is especially smart if it's your first time leaving home and you have doubts.

In conclusion, while there are so many other things you could add to your 'pre-university bucket list of fun things to do', we are sure that the ten exciting stuff we mentioned in today's article will be enough to start you off and keep you busy!
