“So, what’s Tutorhub about and where is it going?” is a question I hear regularly from students and tutors alike. It’s a natural question to ask when signing up to any new website, let alone one focused on the world of online tutoring. So, the purpose of this blog post is to tell you a bit about us, our challenges and how we see our service developing.

Let me start by introducing myself, I am Jon Ellis, one of the Founders of Tutorhub. I am a father to two teenage boys, both of whom have benefitted from private tutoring. I fully recognise the value one to one tuition gives, and have had to battle hard to get myself and my family through the education system.  

Tutorhub is not part of some big multi-national business, we are a bunch of people trying really hard to get online tutoring moving, based in our hometown of Bristol, UK.

Our service

We started in online education back in 2007, with the free tutor search directory beanbag learning which evolved into online tutoring, with Tutorhub back in late 2010. Since when it has grown rapidly into a community of over 550 tutors, 4,400 students and a group of educational bloggers.

Tutorhub is an online service that allows students to connect to expert tutors, across hundreds of subjects. It comes with a tutoring platform equipped with a shared whiteboard, text, voice chat, file upload along with full session recordings / playback and manages tricky issues like payments and customer service. Our website receives tens of thousands of website views every month – it is the go-to place for online tutoring in the UK.

It is a place where you can not only find tutors and get online tutoring, but learn about educational issues, and also get a bit of free help from other students and tutors on your homework.

What we have been doing

Online tutoring is a new and evolving market, and we have been talking extensively to our customers, tutors and industry experts. One of the biggest problems encountered to date has been the ageing technology used for lessons, which can be unreliable and of variable quality.We have addressed this problem head-on by developing our own improved online tutoring platform, using bang up to the minute technology to create a platform that both students and tutors can rely on to get the job done.

Growing Tutorhub the right way

As the popularity of our service grows, it’s very important to us that we continue to adapt the website to fully meet the evolving needs of our tutors and students, whilst delivering good levels of customer service. This means improving the technology to cope with rapid growth and being responsive to both our customers and tutors. We are a professional service are set our standards high.

Getting the values right

In a nutshell, we believe in the following

1. Safety first.  Students and tutors have a right to expect Tutorhub to be a place where they can be safe online.

2. Working together in harmony. The views and contributions of students and tutors are valued and welcomed. We are there to make both of their lives simpler.

3. Educators engaging with the community. It’s not all about the money. Tutors have to be willing to give something back. Responding promptly to tutoring requests and answering student questions in the Q&A Hub from time to time not only makes students more likely to choose them but adds value to the website. 

4. Having your say: Many of us have strong views about education – what we think works and what doesn’t. Share these with us – if you volunteer blog posts to us we will do our best to publish them in our blog, as widening the debate about education is important to us all. 

Help us shape the future

We are looking for tutors to build businesses online using Tutorhub, which has been developed to reward those who engage the most with it with the most work. We also want to reward students that use us frequently, with more cost effective services like tutor led Masterclasses. 

We never rest on our laurels, in the last six months we have added a new online classroom and a new look website. If would like to help direct the future, please get in touch.
